The Modern Languages and Literatures Department provides instruction in Arabic, German, Japanese, Romance languages (French, Spanish), and Slavic languages (Czech, Russian). Classes are typically taught in the target language whenever feasible. The curriculum focuses on developing reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills while fostering cultural awareness of the respective countries. Throughout the academic year, students can attend language-specific lectures and film screenings. Language labs complement classroom instruction. The department collaborates with several interdisciplinary programs including Ethnic Studies, Global Studies, Jewish Studies, Latin American Studies, Medieval and Renaissance Studies, and Women's and Gender Studies.
