The Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing is a prestigious degree for aspiring authors, with the University of Montana's program consistently ranking among the nation's best.
Our alumni include celebrated writers and poets, with many pursuing careers in education or publishing. An growing number (including those who've earned both the MFA and MA in Literature degrees at UM) advance to interdisciplinary doctoral programs.
Beyond writing workshops that hone craft, our curriculum includes literary studies, emphasizing that writers must be both creators and analytical thinkers. This comprehensive approach enables students to refine their artistic voice while deepening their grasp of literary methods. The program additionally prepares graduates to teach creative writing at the college level and publishes CutBank, our graduate-run literary journal featuring poetry, prose, and artwork for over thirty years.
