Our Environmental Philosophy M.A. program stands as the nation's most pursued graduate degree in applied philosophy. Leveraging the department's academic strengths in wilderness studies, Thoreau scholarship, animal ethics, ecological philosophy, synthetic biology, gender-environment relations, aesthetic theory, climate ethics, moral philosophy, and Anthropocene studies, the program offers a comprehensive curriculum. Students participate in field excursions to Yellowstone National Park and the tribally managed Bison Range, complete internships with environmental organizations, and undertake a culminating project focused on applied philosophical research. Our goal is to equip graduates with both theoretical knowledge and real-world competencies.
The program holds special recognition from the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education, reflecting its unique position among Western U.S. institutions. Eligible graduate students from Western states qualify for tuition at 150% of Montana's resident rate. This regional partnership includes Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.
This Master's program serves as either a terminal degree or preparatory study for doctoral work in philosophy, legal education, public policy careers, nonprofit leadership, or environmental journalism and consulting. With renowned faculty specializing in diverse environmental disciplines across campus, the University of Montana provides an exceptional environment for exploring environmental philosophy.
