The University of Montana's Percussion Program, led by Dr. Robert LedBetter, stands as one of the Northwest's most distinguished comprehensive programs. Students receive training to become versatile percussionists through personalized lessons, frequent masterclasses with internationally renowned artists, and exceptional performance experiences. Every percussion major gains expertise in snare drum, mallet keyboards, timpani, orchestral accessories, multiple percussion, drumset, and world percussion while honing their specialized skills. The world percussion curriculum encompasses Steel Drums, West African rhythms (from Guinea, Mali, Ghana, and Senegal), Afro-Cuban percussion, Brazilian styles, Mexican marimba, Salsa Band, and Balinese Gamelan.
Performance opportunities abound for percussion students at The University of Montana, including participation in the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Grizzly Marching Band drumline, Symphony Orchestra, four Jazz Bands, multiple Jazz Combos, Missoula Symphony Orchestra, and various chamber groups. Beyond these ensembles, percussionists showcase their talents to enthusiastic audiences during Percussion Ensemble Concerts. The program presents three annual percussion concerts, featuring the popular World Rhythms Concert that highlights the rotating repertoire of the World Percussion Ensembles.
