The Department of Applied Arts and Sciences offers comprehensive education in communication, mathematics, social sciences, and writing. Students must complete a foundational curriculum in these interconnected disciplines before graduation, as outlined in each program's structure. The department also offers preparatory courses in writing and math to equip students with essential skills for their required coursework. It administers the Associate of Arts (A.A.) Degree program. Within this department, the communication studies faculty focuses on delivering high-quality introductory communication education for University of Montana students in certificate, two-year degree, and four-year transfer programs. Our program emphasizes analyzing communication strategies and interactions across various social settings - from public forums to private conversations, within cultural contexts or cross-cultural exchanges. We prepare students to recognize communication's impact on civic engagement and the ethical challenges they'll encounter as communicators. Our mission includes guiding students in transforming communication objectives into impactful expressions.

Qualification Requirements

To be considered for undergraduate admission to University of Montana, all international applicants must demonstrate English proficiency by submitting a score on an approved test or by qualifying for an exemption. To be eligible for admission, freshman students must have met/be on track to meet all upper/senior secondary school requirements with the equivalent of a 2.5 U.S. GPA to be automatically considered for admission to undergraduate programs.
