The Department of Applied Arts and Sciences offers comprehensive education in communication, mathematics, social sciences, and writing. Students must complete a foundational curriculum in these interconnected disciplines before graduation, as outlined in each program's structure. The department also offers preparatory courses in writing and math to equip students with essential skills for their required coursework. It administers the Associate of Arts (A.A.) Degree program. Within this department, the communication studies faculty focuses on delivering high-quality introductory communication education for University of Montana students in certificate, two-year degree, and four-year transfer programs. Our program emphasizes analyzing communication strategies and interactions across various social settings - from public forums to private conversations, within cultural contexts or cross-cultural exchanges. We prepare students to recognize communication's impact on civic engagement and the ethical challenges they'll encounter as communicators. Our mission includes guiding students in transforming communication objectives into impactful expressions.
