The doctoral program focuses on both empirical and theoretical methods in biological research. Candidates must combine fundamental biology skills with specialized studies in their chosen concentration. This program aims to equip students with research expertise and training suitable for high-level roles in academia, government agencies, public organizations, and private industry.
Admission to the Ph.D. program requires strong endorsement from a prospective faculty advisor. We strongly encourage students considering the Ph.D. program or Thesis Master's track to reach out directly to faculty members in their area of interest; a directory of active research laboratories is available here. The Graduate Committee reviews all applications, providing admission recommendations to the Graduate School Dean. Selected applicants may be invited for interviews, typically funded by the department whenever feasible, during February and early March. Prospective students are also welcome to schedule independent visits to the department throughout the year.
