The MU Department of Theatre boasts a prestigious legacy dating back to the early 1900s, when a dedicated group of theater enthusiasts committed to enriching campus culture by staging performances in Lathrop Hall's repurposed dining room. The program gained momentum in 1925 with the arrival of Professor Donovan Rhynsburger, who founded the Missouri Workshop Theatre. For more than eight decades, the department has maintained its standing as a globally recognized hub for theater studies, performance research, and artistic production. The program achieved national recognition in 2007 when Academic Analytics ranked it fourth in the country for scholarly output in Theatre Literature, History and Criticism (as featured in the Chronicle of Higher Education, November 11, 2007). MU Theatre provides comprehensive academic programs at both graduate and undergraduate levels.
