The Doctor of Philosophy in Special Education provides concentration options in Behavior Disorders, Early Childhood Special Education, and Learning Disabilities. This PhD program mandates 72 credit hours beyond the master's degree. Students will design an individualized plan to achieve their academic and research objectives within their selected specialization.
Prospective students who satisfy admission requirements will receive provisional acceptance, be paired with an advisor, and must complete specified foundational courses.
Following the completion of 9 credit hours - including 3 credits in quantitative methods and 6 credits in special education doctoral core classes - candidates must pass a qualifying exam for full departmental admission.
After passing the qualifying examination, students assemble a program committee and create a detailed study plan. This committee must include four or more graduate faculty members (with at least three from within the department and one external member). The study plan outlines required coursework and competency demonstrations to fulfill departmental expectations.
