The nursing PhD program develops clinical scholars, educators, and researchers for leadership positions across academic, industry, and healthcare environments. Since high-quality health research demands interdisciplinary knowledge, the program welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds. Our PhD candidates have included individuals with degrees in health administration, education, medical ethics, various therapies, public health, and social work.
MU mandates at least 72 credit hours for the PhD, which must include 15 hours of advanced coursework (8000-9000 level), excluding independent studies. Students may transfer up to 30 qualifying graduate credits from accredited institutions, and with approval, up to 6 professional credit hours can apply toward the degree requirements.
MUSSON provides two rigorous PhD pathways with identical curriculum and outcomes - either online or through our international residential option. The only difference lies in course delivery format. For comprehensive information, visit the Sinclair School of Nursing's PhD Program Options page.
