The Bachelor of Science in Education with a focus on Art Education equips students to teach art in public, private, and alternative school settings. This program is ideal if you're an artist or designer who enjoys working with young people, aims to shape the future through arts education, and wants to influence how students perceive and engage with their environment and others. At MU, students collaborate with professional artists, mentors, experienced teachers, administrators, and faculty from the School of Visual Studies to build the expertise needed to improve educational experiences for children and teens. The curriculum, offered through the College of Education and Human Development, examines educators' roles in fostering learning across developmental stages while addressing how cultural, political, historical, and economic factors impact students, teachers, and educational institutions. Graduates who complete the certification requirements receive state approval to teach art from kindergarten through 12th grade. Hands-on training in schools and community organizations starts in the second year and progresses each term, culminating in a final teaching internship that builds both competence and confidence. The Art Education program offers comprehensive training in art instruction techniques for all age groups, helping students cultivate visual literacy skills. This encompasses art creation, art appreciation, interdisciplinary connections, and art presentation for diverse audiences. The curriculum covers art teaching methodologies, art criticism, design and digital media instruction, assessment strategies for art education, and professional development for aspiring artist-educators.
