The Philosophy Department provides diverse introductory courses at the 1000- and 2000-levels, 3000-level classes covering philosophy's historical development, and advanced 4000-level seminars focusing on specialized topics like ethics, philosophy of science, and philosophy of religion. These upper-level courses are led by distinguished faculty recognized nationally or internationally for their philosophical expertise. With class sizes typically ranging from 15 to 25 students, upper-division courses foster close interactions between students and professors.
Students pursuing philosophy degrees receive individualized guidance from department faculty, who prioritize outstanding undergraduate education. Each major is paired with a faculty advisor available to consult on academic planning, educational goals at MU, and any challenges students may encounter. Our current cohort of approximately 50 majors represents diverse backgrounds and encompasses a broad spectrum of political and religious perspectives.
