Anthropologists explore the full spectrum of human existence, from our earliest beginnings to today's interconnected world. Using scientific methods, we examine cultural diversity and biological differences through ecological and evolutionary frameworks. The BA in anthropology offers students adaptable pathways to explore their interests while developing theoretical knowledge and practical skills across anthropological and related fields. Anthropology graduates acquire versatile competencies suited for diverse career paths including policy development in government and NGOs, educational roles at various levels, museum and laboratory research positions, as well as opportunities in archaeology, cultural resource management, technology, conservation, and healthcare.
An anthropology major also provides strong preparation for graduate studies in multiple disciplines or advanced degrees in business, education, law, public health, data science, or medicine. Students from other majors benefit from anthropological perspectives while fulfilling general education requirements (Biological Science, Behavioral Science, Social Science, Humanities, Diversity Intensive, Writing Intensive).
The anthropology program awards either a standard BA or an Honors BA degree. Our undergraduate curriculum fosters cultural awareness and helps students comprehend the origins of human diversity. As a dynamic, wide-ranging discipline, anthropology offers structured foundational knowledge while permitting specialized focus areas.
Students selecting this concentration build expertise in analyzing and preserving material artifacts from both ancient and modern societies. Participating in field schools is highly recommended. Our department maintains a current listing of field programs offered by other institutions. MU-sponsored options include AMS 2940 and various summer study abroad courses. We also encourage additional research or internship experiences, especially with MURR and the Museum of Anthropology. Those following this track may benefit from complementing their studies with an Archaeology minor.
