The Department of Writing Studies educates students on how written communication (including digital, visual, and textual forms) influences society, with special focus on scientific and technical fields. The Technical Communication Certificate program teaches students to apply foundational theories and research-based methods to develop content that addresses real-world challenges in technical communication environments. Through client collaborations, remote teamwork, mentorship programs, and cutting-edge technologies, students gain practical experience while building expertise in digital communication, user experience, and science/health/medical writing. Graduate faculty with active research programs in these fields lead all certificate courses. Participants may also engage with the Technical Communication Advisory Board (TCAB), comprising industry professionals who facilitate hands-on learning through networking events, mentorship initiatives, and internship placements. This completely online program prepares working professionals to enter the technical communication field or provides a stepping stone for customized graduate studies aligned with career aspirations. All certificate credits transfer directly to the MS in Scientific and Technical Communication program upon admission and departmental approval.
Anyone who has or will obtain a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the U.S. or a comparable degree from an officially recognized college or university outside the U.S. may apply for graduate admission
