The Department of English and Technical Communication provides both in-person and online Master of Science programs in Technical Communication. Our institution has undergone multiple name transitions: originally founded as the Missouri School of Mines (MSM) in 1870, it was renamed University of Missouri - Rolla (UMR) in 1964, and later became Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) in 2008. While English courses have been available at our university for over a century, the English major was formally established in 1967 under the Department of Humanities. The English department became independent in 1984. Dr. Jim C. Pogue served as the inaugural Humanities department chair, while Dr. Jim Wise led as the first English department chair - both distinguished English professors. Missouri S&T has a long history of teaching technical writing, though the B.S. and M.S. programs in technical communication are more recent additions, introduced in 2005. Around this period, the department was rebranded as the Department of English and Technical Communication.
