The Master of Arts in Composition program provides in-depth training via coursework and private instruction in composition and orchestration, allowing students to tailor their education with diverse elective options that lead to a culminating recital. Composition majors benefit from one-on-one mentoring while engaging in collaborative seminars, with abundant performance venues available through both the School of Music and the vibrant Twin Cities arts scene. The Contemporary Music Workshop fosters continuous creative exchange between composers and performers. Our distinguished composition faculty, recognized nationally and internationally across multiple disciplines, actively supports each student's unique artistic vision and intellectual growth. Prospective students must demonstrate equivalent preparation including at least one year of orchestration, one semester of counterpoint, and three years of music theory covering both tonal and post-tonal analysis.
