The Department of Classical and Near Eastern Studies (CNES) unites scholars and graduate students across disciplines that might otherwise be separated into distinct programs. CNES emphasizes thorough philological and literary education while promoting the study of the ancient Mediterranean as a culturally interconnected region. While master's and doctoral programs enable specialization in specific eras and areas, the department actively promotes cross-disciplinary coursework and a comprehensive perspective on research and pedagogy. Supporting resources include specialized centers for Medieval, Jewish, and Modern Greek Studies.
The preferred undergraduate GPA for admittance to the program is 3.50.
For the major track in classics, students should have sufficient knowledge to begin graduate reading courses in either Greek or Latin and at least intermediate ability in the other language.
