The Global, Transnational, and Comparative Sociology cluster promotes cross-disciplinary examination of worldwide economic, political, legal, social, and environmental systems. Faculty and students within this group conduct research across all global regions, with specialized focus on Africa, Europe, Southeast Asia, and India. A central objective involves transcending the traditional national-international dichotomy, which fails to capture today's complex web of global interconnectedness and persistent inequalities.
What distinguishes our sociology program is the remarkable breadth of topics explored by faculty and graduate students, both within the United States and across borders. Our program stands out through its balanced emphasis on quantitative and qualitative research methods, combined with a dedication to maintaining an academically challenging yet nurturing atmosphere. We actively cultivate diverse perspectives and backgrounds. The Sociology Department exclusively offers a PhD program, though doctoral candidates may obtain a master's degree as part of their progression toward the doctorate.
