Health informatics (sometimes called biomedical informatics) is a multidisciplinary area that utilizes computer science, information technology, statistics, management, and other scientific approaches to facilitate biomedical research and enhance data utilization, information management, and knowledge application from fundamental science to patient care. The field aims to ultimately enhance public health, quality of life, and economic productivity. The curriculum includes required coursework in health informatics, computer science, and biostatistics, along with specialized electives in technical and health-related subjects. Students can choose among four specialization paths: Data Science and Informatics for Learning Health Systems, Clinical Informatics, Translational Bioinformatics, or Precision and Personalized Medicine (PPM) Informatics. Those selecting the Data Science track must complete the University's Data Science MS program before advancing to the PhD. Students in the other three tracks must finish the Health Informatics MS degree first. The program consists of two phases: Phase I (MS) followed by Phase II (PhD). Applicants holding relevant MS degrees from similar programs may receive partial or complete exemptions from Phase I, pending evaluation and approval by the Academic Program Committee (APC).
The preferred undergraduate GPA for admittance to the program is 3.50.
Applicants must have a BS or equivalent in science, technology, engineering, computer science, math, or another pertinent field from a regionally accredited university or international equivalent.
