The PhD curriculum equips aspiring scholars for careers in academia, focusing on English and related disciplines through teaching and research. Students enjoy flexible course requirements, enabling them to customize their academic journey. The program fosters interdisciplinary approaches, potentially incorporating frameworks from philosophy, anthropology, psychology, and cultural studies, or delving into the historical contexts of primary texts. Over six years, doctoral students gain diverse teaching experience—starting as discussion leaders in lecture courses, progressing to composition instruction, and eventually designing specialized courses in their research fields.

The preferred undergraduate GPA for admittance to the program is 3.50.
Other requirements to be completed before admission:
A minimum of four courses in English, three of which must be at the upper division level, is required. The courses should be widely distributed.
English Language Proficiency Requirements: TOEFL iBT – 105; TOEFL pBT - 620; IELTS Academic – 7.5; MELAB – 88; Pearson Test of Academic English (PTE Academic) – 59; Cambridge Assessment English (CAE) C1 Advanced – 180.
Candidates are admitted fall semester only; all materials must be received by December 1st.
