In 1969, the University launched its urban studies program. During the 1960s, examining cities and urban lifestyles and structures was seen as groundbreaking across various academic fields. This interdisciplinary major, primarily based in the College of Liberal Arts, incorporates courses from multiple undergraduate colleges. Students engage with a blend of theoretical, practical, experiential, and skills-oriented classes centered on urban themes like social/cultural dynamics, political economy and planning, infrastructure and environment, or global urban challenges. The curriculum connects students with local professionals who teach specialized courses on topics ranging from youth homelessness to international housing policies, transit systems, and public-private collaborations. These practitioners showcase the wide range of career paths available to urban studies graduates. The program actively promotes international study opportunities.
