Established in 2006 to address increasing needs for flexible degree pathways, Multidisciplinary Studies (MdS) reflects the University of Minnesota's dedication to personalized undergraduate education, offering adult learners customized degree paths across multiple disciplines. By combining courses from three of five interdisciplinary fields—including applied/professional studies, arts/humanities, communications, history/social sciences, and science/health sciences—students craft either a BA or BS degree. The program begins with a credit-bearing planning seminar where students develop degree plans aligned with their career and personal aspirations. Designed for returning adult students with at least a two-year educational hiatus, MdS appeals to those seeking the benefits of tailored learning. Monthly information sessions introduce prospective students to the program, with academic advisors guiding them through initial planning. Many courses are now offered online, with potential for full remote degree completion.
