The Applied Statistics Master's program equips students for professional roles as statisticians across various sectors like industry, government, consulting, and research institutions. The curriculum mandates completion of 30 credit hours through a minimum of 10 courses. While foundational courses in probability and statistical theory are required, the program focuses heavily on practical statistical modeling and data interpretation. Students can choose from diverse electives and related courses offered by the Statistics Department and other units such as Biostatistics, Computer Science, Economics, Industrial & Operations Engineering, Mathematics, Information School, Sociology, and the Survey Research Center. Typically completed in four semesters (two years), the program can be accelerated to three semesters. Maintaining a minimum 3.00 GPA (B average) is required for satisfactory academic progress.
It is strongly recommended that prospective students have a good background in calculus and linear algebra and have taken one course in probability, one course in theoretical statistics and at least one in applied statistics. Students who have not taken these prerequisite courses are generally required to take them in the first year of graduate study, with no credit toward the requirements for the degree.
