Robots are advancing from fixed-position manufacturing tools to dynamic, mobile systems capable of gathering data, processing information, and making autonomous decisions. The DARPA Grand Challenges demonstrated both the remarkable achievements in autonomous vehicle technology and the substantial challenges still ahead. Our research at the University of Michigan focuses on developing feedback control mechanisms for bipedal robot movement, aiming to create machines that can walk with human-like balance and flexibility. Additionally, we employ AI methods to address navigation planning, uncertainty management, environmental mapping, sensor data interpretation, and ongoing adaptive learning.
