To qualify for the M.S.E. degree, candidates should hold an undergraduate degree equivalent to a Civil Engineering program. Those with bachelor's degrees in different fields may still enroll in the M.S.E. program but might need to take foundational courses to bridge any gaps in their academic background. These additional requirements will be communicated upon admission. Applicants with a Civil Engineering or Civil and Environmental Engineering undergraduate degree can enter the Materials Engineering M.S.E. program directly. Other degree holders may need to fulfill prerequisite coursework before full program admission. Required preparation includes three calculus semesters, two physics semesters, plus coursework in statics, dynamics, and solid mechanics.
The Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) Department provides three Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) and three Master of Engineering (MEng) degree options, along with various dual-degree opportunities with other university programs. The MSE tracks involve 30 graduate credit hours (usually 10 classes) with an optional thesis or significant research component. The MEng programs require 26 credit hours (typically 8 courses and 2 seminars) without a thesis or major research project requirement.
