The Biomedical Sciences and Public Health fields are generating vast amounts of complex data, encompassing diverse types such as omics data, medical imaging, geospatial information, mobile health metrics, and electronic health records. This data deluge creates both significant challenges and exciting prospects for biostatistics professionals in research and education. Recognizing the urgent need for skilled professionals with strong quantitative and computational abilities in data analysis, the University of Michigan's Department of Biostatistics introduced a health data science (HDS) specialization within its Master of Science program starting fall 2019. This specialized track enhances and streamlines professional education by emphasizing computational techniques and data analysis skills. The program is especially valuable for students pursuing a terminal Master's degree with aspirations to enter the data science sector. Current PhD candidates also have the option to pursue this concentration, though they'll need to complete extra coursework to satisfy both PhD and HDS specialization requirements.
