The M.A. program caters to University of Michigan students enrolled in professional or academic programs outside philosophy who would benefit from graduate-level philosophical training. Admission is typically restricted to these students, with exceptions made only at the discretion of the admissions committee. Those wishing to transition from the M.A. to Ph.D. program must go through the standard application process and compete with all other applicants - no preferential treatment is given to current M.A. students. Accepted Ph.D. candidates may petition to have their M.A. coursework count toward doctoral requirements, though this isn't guaranteed.
