The University of Michigan's American politics program boasts a rich history and dynamic contemporary presence. Beginning with the groundbreaking survey research of Campbell, Converse, Miller, and Stokes during the behavioral revolution in political science, the department has expanded to embrace diverse perspectives on U.S. political studies. Our faculty employ both quantitative and qualitative methodologies to rigorously examine domestic politics. Current research explores national and local governance structures, media influence, voter behavior, civic engagement, identity politics, policy implementation, organizational dynamics in politics, and legal frameworks. Academic pursuits within the department address pressing societal challenges such as healthcare reform, urban development, migration patterns, economic inequality, justice system reforms, educational access, equity initiatives, environmental protection, fiscal policies, international relations, national security, and armed conflicts.
