The University of Florida's Political Science Department provides a Ph.D. specialization in political methodology. This field encompasses the investigative approaches suitable for political science research, incorporating quantitative data analysis methods, qualitative strategies, and targeted solutions for specific challenges. The program aims to deliver diverse coursework that equips students with methodological proficiency to address political science inquiries. Emphasizing methodological diversity and comprehensive training, the Department prepares graduates for academic and research careers in both methodological and substantive areas.
Unlike other political science disciplines, political methodology inherently supports research across all subfields. Combining advanced methodological capabilities with robust theoretical knowledge enables cutting-edge political science investigations. The Department focuses on equipping students with essential scholarly tools. Those pursuing careers at research institutions are particularly advised to incorporate methodology into their studies during their time at the University of Florida.
Courses are available within the Department and through collaborations with other University of Florida departments. Methodology students complete a core sequence covering Data Analysis (mandatory for all Ph.D. candidates), Linear Models in Political Research, and Maximum Likelihood. Beyond these requirements, students enjoy significant flexibility to tailor coursework to their specific research interests. The Department additionally partners with the ICPSR Summer Program at the University of Michigan and Syracuse University's IQMR to offer supplementary training opportunities.
