Physiology isn't merely an academic subject—it's the scientific discipline most intimately connected to medicine. Specialists in physiology focus on the comprehensive study of biological systems. This doesn't imply we disregard cellular and molecular mechanisms—quite the opposite. However, we believe it's vital to advance our research further, understanding how these elements combine to form tissues, organs, and entire organisms, revealing their roles in both healthy and diseased states. The University of Michigan's Physiology Department, founded in 1882, was among the earliest. In 2002, we rebranded as Molecular and Integrative Physiology (MIP) to better represent the full scope of our work. Our program boasts nearly 50 PhD candidates and offers research opportunities across more than 65 faculty laboratories. The University of Michigan's Program in Biomedical Sciences serves as an interdisciplinary entry point, managing admissions and the initial year of PhD studies for 13 departmental programs, including Molecular & Integrative Physiology.
