Modern civilization has become deeply dependent on large-scale cloud computing systems that power every aspect of daily life, including transportation, communication, commerce, governance, and scientific research. These capabilities are made possible through highly parallelized, warehouse-sized computing facilities managed by major providers such as Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft, and Google, along with various private and governmental organizations. Developers creating future data-intensive applications and large-scale computing systems must overcome significant obstacles, such as enhancing performance, boosting developer efficiency, ensuring service quality, optimizing energy usage, managing power supply, maintaining system reliability, regulating temperatures, and guaranteeing operational control. Within this research domain, CSE faculty are working on developing both hardware and software frameworks for massive computing systems. Key research areas encompass server design, specialized hardware components, accelerator technologies and GPU computing, scientific computation, innovative memory solutions, data center physical architecture, distributed software and storage platforms, virtualization techniques, advanced networking, and cloud computing programming environments.
