The Comparative Literature PhD is a six-year program highlighting the global and cross-disciplinary aspects of literary studies. Our adaptable curriculum enables students to specialize in traditional comparative literature fields while exploring emerging humanities trends. While maintaining rigorous language standards, the program offers flexibility in applying linguistic and cultural skills. With a focus on literary, critical, and cultural theories, it accommodates diverse interpretations of theoretical frameworks. Candidates must develop advanced proficiency in at least two languages beyond English, verified through teaching or advanced coursework by their second year to meet candidacy requirements and progress toward examinations and dissertation work.
Applicants complete a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. college or university accredited by a regional accrediting association; or complete an international degree that is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree from a college or university recognized and approved by the Ministry of Education or Commission responsible for higher education in the country where the degree is earned.
