The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) provides two distinct Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) options: Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering. Typically, our PhD curricula encompass 50-60 graduate credit hours beyond undergraduate studies, with no foreign language prerequisites. Doctoral candidates concentrate primarily on dissertation work that must advance their field through meaningful research contributions. Specialization tracks cover: Construction Engineering and Management, Geotechnical Engineering, Hydraulic and Hydrologic Systems, Intelligent Systems, Materials and Highway Engineering, Structural Engineering, and Next-Generation Transportation Systems.

Qualification Requirements
The Civil and Environmental Engineering department expects an applicant to have earned a Bachelor's degree in the field or an equivalent by the time they register in a CEE program. Applicants should possess a very strong background in math, physics, chemistry, or engineering. Admission is extremely competitive.
A Master's degree is not required for admittance to the PhD program. Most students who go directly into the PhD program get a MSE in Civil or Environmental Engineering along the way. Some students also plan their coursework so that they earn an additional master's degree in another engineering department.
