The Department of Civil Engineering within the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences provides graduate programs culminating in MS and PhD degrees, along with a graduate certificate. These programs aim to educate future civil engineers who will drive innovation, create cutting-edge technologies, and implement creative solutions to enhance the durability, safety, and sustainability of critical infrastructure. Students can explore an extensive curriculum with specialized studies across key civil engineering disciplines, focusing on interdisciplinary methods to tackle urgent societal challenges—particularly in upgrading urban infrastructure. Faculty members engage in advanced research, partnering with graduate students on both practical and theoretical projects.
Research areas include fluid dynamics in natural and engineered environments, examining coastal processes, beach formation, resilient shoreline defenses, flood mitigation, and renewable energy systems utilizing wind, wave, and tidal power.

A bachelor's degree in civil engineering, or a related field such as another engineering discipline, physical science, or mathematics.
A grade point average of at least B or equivalent in engineering, mathematics, and science courses.
Three (3) letters of recommendation
Completion and submission of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test. Stony Brook University's test code is 2548, for Civil Engineering it's 1102
For non-native speakers of English, submission of the TOEFL or IELTS test.
Acceptance by both the Civil Engineering Graduate Program and the Graduate School.
An applicant must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.00 on a 4.00 point scale.

TOEFL: 90 for admission to a doctoral program
