The Rackham Graduate School oversees the doctoral program in Asian Languages and Cultures. Applicants holding a Bachelor's degree who demonstrate a strong research orientation are encouraged to apply for the Ph.D. Program in Asian Languages and Cultures. Faculty members focus on East, South, and Southeast Asian studies, offering specialized knowledge in diverse fields including cultural studies, intellectual history, linguistics, literary analysis, performance studies, philosophical inquiry, religious studies, and visual culture. Admitted students in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures can design customized graduate programs exploring subjects like Asian cinema, Chinese historical studies, Korean cultural traditions, Japanese literary works, Javanese cultural research, Buddhist philosophy, or any interdisciplinary combination of regional focus and academic specialization where faculty resources and engagement permit.
Applicants complete a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. college or university accredited by a regional accrediting association; or complete an international degree that is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree from a college or university recognized and approved by the Ministry of Education or Commission responsible for higher education in the country where the degree is earned.
