The Music major offers students comprehensive exposure to music through both creative practice and scholarly examination, encompassing music history, theory, composition, and performance. Designed to complement LSA's Bachelor of Arts and Sciences programs, this major presents a humanities-focused counterpart to the specialized Bachelor of Musical Arts and Bachelor of Music degrees available at the School of Music. This program aims to cultivate an appreciation of music as both artistic expression and cultural phenomenon across various historical periods, societies, and locations. Students explore how musical works and traditions reflect aesthetic principles, societal norms, political ideologies, spiritual beliefs, and individual perspectives. The curriculum examines music theory frameworks, interdisciplinary connections with other art forms and academic fields, and the transformative role of technology in musical innovation and distribution.
