The Microbiology Program operates as an interdisciplinary initiative overseen by the Microbiology Major Committee, with academic resources from the Biology Program. Contributing departments encompass Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB) and Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology (MCDB) in LSA, the School of Public Health's Epidemiology Department, along with Microbiology & Immunology and Internal Medicine at the Medical School. This field explores microorganisms like viruses, algae, bacteria, protozoa, and fungi, while also incorporating immunobiology. Pursuing microbiology equips students for advanced studies in microbiology, biochemistry, agricultural sciences, food science, and other biology disciplines focused on cellular structures. A bachelor's degree in microbiology can lead to entry-level roles in medical, industrial, or government labs. Those planning graduate studies should complete at least two research terms, which may involve graded courses, UROP involvement, or independent projects. Typically, graduate-bound students complete 1-2 graded research courses (2-4 credits each).
