The tiniest life forms, such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi, may escape our naked-eye view yet profoundly impact health, nutrition, medicine, energy systems, and ecosystems. Known collectively as microbes, these microscopic organisms represent Earth's earliest life and maintain crucial roles in shaping our world. Scientists now intensively investigate microbiomes—complex microbial communities—to advance understanding of human wellness, climate change, disease control, environmental cleanup, renewable energy, and other critical fields.
The microbiology degree program equips students with contemporary research skills through extensive hands-on lab training. Coursework covers microbial cell biology, genetic mechanisms, environmental interactions, evolutionary processes, and physiological functions. Students master modern laboratory methods, acquiring precisely the technical proficiency that employers and advanced academic programs value. Beyond classroom instruction, learners may engage in faculty-supervised or independent research, developing skills in data analysis, experimental design, and scientific communication.
Graduates with microbiology degrees enter diverse professional paths including biotech innovation, science education, medical fields, computational biology, and food industry safety. Numerous alumni continue their education through graduate programs, pursuing medical degrees, dental training, or doctoral studies in biological sciences.
Applicant must have high school record should demonstrate both rigor and breadth in the types of course work you pursue. A competitive academic record should show some of the most challenging advanced-level work offered at or through your school in as many areas as possible, while maintaining a strong GPA. The following chart shows the number of years that most admitted students studied in each subject area; English 4 years, Math 4 years, Social Studies 3-4 years, Science 3-4 years, Single Foreign Language 3-4 years and Additional Academic/Fine Arts 2 years. Applicant must have ACT score of 30 and overall SAT score of 1395.
