Guide young minds in exploring the societal influences that mold our world. Covering historical analysis to civic education, social studies forms a crucial foundation for developing informed citizens.
This program equips you with modern teaching techniques to educate students about key cultural, economic, geographical, political, and societal aspects of human civilization, focusing on research-backed instruction and innovative activities that boost comprehension.

Earning a bachelor's in social studies with elementary teaching certification qualifies you to instruct all subjects for K-5, or with the social studies specialization, you can obtain certification to teach social studies for grades 6-8. Upon program completion, you'll receive both your bachelor's degree and faculty endorsement for the Michigan Elementary Standard Certificate.

The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) has updated teacher certification to include 6 grade levels. CEHHS has proposed programs for Birth-Kindergarten (BK), Pre-K through Grade 3 (Pre-K3), and Grades 3-6 to the MDE. These programs are also undergoing university curriculum review. After approval, enrollment for these grade-level programs will open for Fall 2022. Existing elementary-certification students and those enrolled before Fall 2022 can consult advisors to decide whether to continue their current program or transition to the new grade-level options.
