Earning a bachelor's in social studies with elementary teaching certification qualifies you to instruct all subjects for K-5, or with the social studies specialization, you can obtain certification to teach social studies for grades 6-8. The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) has updated teacher certification to include 6 grade levels. CEHHS has proposed programs for Birth-Kindergarten (BK), Pre-K through Grade 3 (Pre-K3), and Grades 3-6 to the MDE. These programs are also undergoing university curriculum review. After approval, enrollment for these grade-level programs will open for Fall 2022. Existing elementary-certification students and those enrolled before Fall 2022 can consult advisors to decide whether to continue their current program or transition to the new grade-level options.
