Over the last ten years, our Polish program has achieved remarkable success and keeps expanding. At its heart are language courses, spanning beginner to advanced levels (first through fourth year). The University of Michigan stands alone among U.S. institutions in consistently providing all four years of Polish instruction annually. Recognized as perhaps the nation's premier Polish studies program, U-M's offering includes comprehensive literature surveys along with specialized courses in Polish theater, fiction, cinema, and contemporary culture. With Polish-Americans constituting Michigan's fourth-largest ethnic community, many U-M students share this heritage. This program's excellence stems from close collaboration with the Center for Russian and East European Studies, which promotes Polish-related initiatives campus-wide and connects faculty engaged in Polish cultural studies. Additional support comes from the Copernicus Endowment, particularly through its yearly lecture series featuring prominent Polish academics, creatives, authors, and intellectuals.
