The Basic Language Certificate, available in Japanese and Spanish, awards students an official credential upon completing an 18-credit structured program. At Idaho State University, this program unlocks diverse career paths in public service, healthcare, business, and politics, broadening students' perspectives beyond their immediate surroundings. Through developing critical thinking abilities, exploring foreign cultures' history, politics, literature, and traditions, and achieving proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing non-English languages, students gain insights into global commerce, communication trends, migration patterns, and worldwide cultural, political, and economic integration. Spanish certificate candidates must complete the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) to graduate.
