The Latina/o Studies major provides students with comprehensive knowledge about the rich historical and cultural diversity of Latina/o communities in the United States and internationally. This interdisciplinary program aims to expose students to multiple academic perspectives for examining U.S. Latina/o experiences while exploring key scholarly themes in this field. The 30-credit curriculum requires students to consult with the Latina/o Studies Program Director regarding their educational goals. As part of the American Culture Department, this major enables students to gain cultural proficiency regarding the various communities that form U.S. Latina/o populations, including Chicano/as, Mexican-Americans, Puerto Ricans, Cuban-Americans, Central Americans, and other groups with Spanish, Indigenous, and African roots. As the nation's largest minority population, Latinas/os have significantly influenced American society through their labor, cultural practices, language, and values while playing a vital role in shaping the country's historical narrative.
