The Early Childhood Education with Elementary Certification Program prepares individuals to work with children from infancy through fifth grade. These specialized educators play a crucial role in shaping young minds during critical developmental stages. The program equips you to teach children aged 0-8, featuring a distinctive curriculum focused on social constructivism and Reggio Emilia approaches. With the Early Childhood Endorsement, you'll qualify to teach in both general early childhood and special education settings. Graduates receive a bachelor's degree along with faculty endorsement for the Michigan Elementary Standard Certificate. Following the Michigan Department of Education's (MDE) restructuring of certification into six grade bands, CEHHS has proposed Birth-Kindergarten (BK), Pre-K through Grade 3 (Pre-K3), and Grades 3-6 programs to the MDE. These programs are also undergoing the university's internal curriculum approval process. Upon approval, students can begin applying for these grade band programs starting Fall 2022. Existing elementary-certification students and those admitted before Fall 2022 will have the option to consult with academic advisors about continuing in their current program or transitioning to a new grade band program.
