The RC Social Theory and Practice Major equips students with critical thinking and hands-on skills for global involvement and careers focused on equity and civic responsibility. Faculty from diverse fields including sociology, political science, history, anthropology, economics, education, environmental justice, sustainable agriculture, geography, and psychology offer interdisciplinary perspectives on contemporary challenges in both American society and worldwide contexts. Through this program, students master theoretical frameworks, research techniques, and action-oriented approaches to analyze social systems and drive meaningful change. They complete foundational coursework as a cohort while designing personalized academic paths aligned with their passions. Past STP students have explored themes like U.S. Healthcare Reform, Globalization's Impact on Detroit, Youth Justice Systems in America and Senegal, Urban Community Development, Sustainable Farming in Michigan and Cuba, Public Health Policy, and Grassroots Engagement Initiatives. The STP Major Advisor guides students through program requirements, monitors their academic journey, and handles administrative approvals. Each student also works with a faculty mentor who provides intellectual support and shares their scholarly focus. While students are paired with an initial mentor when submitting their major proposal (refer to section c), they may collaborate with multiple mentors throughout their studies.
