The Master of Professional Science (MPS) program equips students for scientific careers across industries, government agencies, and non-profits, where workforce needs are expanding. MPS programs were created and adopted nationwide to meet employer needs for versatile, skilled professionals with comprehensive knowledge and hands-on abilities to tackle evolving environmental challenges and enhance stewardship of natural and cultural assets. The program's design enables students to finish their degree in as few as 12 months (for certain specializations), gaining both theoretical grounding and practical experience to succeed in today's competitive science job market.
More than 50% of the global population lives in expanding coastal regions. These zones serve as vital economic hubs, sustaining maritime trade, recreational industries, fishing operations, aquaculture, and energy extraction. The coastal zone—encompassing shallow waters and adjacent lands—contains some of Earth's most vulnerable ecosystems. Reconciling economic development with delicate ecosystems and dense populations presents a significant challenge for resource managers in modern times. Likewise, adapting to climate shifts, rising sea levels, shoreline degradation, and extreme weather events creates further complexities for coastal planners. The Coastal Zone Management specialization familiarizes students with legal and administrative structures in this critical field. The curriculum combines subjects like coastal fishery regulation, marine conservation zones, harbor administration, sustainable tourism, environmental evaluations, and petroleum exploration. Participants can pursue internships with corporate, governmental, or non-profit organizations (NGOs) and undertake practical field studies. Further internship options are available with environmental advocacy organizations and advisory firms. This specialization belongs to the Environmental Science and Policy Department at Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science, which maintains longstanding partnerships and research locations in Panama (among other nations), offering students direct engagement with coastal management challenges.
