The Department of Physics provides graduate programs for both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, including thesis and non-thesis options for the M.S. track. Priority in admissions is given to applicants pursuing a Ph.D. Typically, Ph.D. candidates focus on foundational coursework during their first year and take the qualifying exam in January after enrollment. By the second year, students are expected to engage in research, and within six months of passing the qualifying exam, they must present preliminary research findings to a committee. While this initial presentation often evolves into a dissertation, students retain flexibility to change projects or research areas. The Ph.D. program admits approximately 5-10 students annually, all of whom receive financial assistance.
