The Meteorology and Physical Oceanography (MPO) graduate program was established based on the concept that ocean and atmospheric systems follow comparable physical laws, and examining them together yields valuable understanding. The MPO curriculum mandates dual proficiency in these areas, equipping students to perform cutting-edge research through theoretical, observational, and computational methods. This program provides robust preparation for investigating diverse subjects such as ocean-atmosphere interactions, global deep-water circulation, hurricanes, El Niño events, Madden-Julian climate patterns, and Earth's climatic changes. Additional research areas are detailed here or through faculty-specific research pages.
Students can pursue either a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) or Master of Science (M.S.) degree, with typical completion times of 5 years for Ph.D. candidates and 2 years for M.S. students.
