Neuroscience explores the nervous system (including the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves), behavioral processes, and the essence of consciousness and cognition. This multidisciplinary field integrates knowledge from medicine, biology, psychology, physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, and other disciplines, all centered around understanding the nervous system. As one of the fastest-growing research areas, the University of Miami involves more than 50 faculty across 13 departments spanning three campuses in undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral education. Their neuroscience research represents over 20% of the university's federally funded projects. Although the major is housed in the College of Arts & Sciences, faculty and the Steering Committee come from various schools, including the Miller School of Medicine. Many professors are also affiliated with the College of Arts & Sciences' biology and psychology departments.
Student Learning Objectives
Students will build a foundational understanding of neuroscience as a scientific field.
Students will enhance their research and analytical abilities through core courses and/or hands-on lab work.
Students will refine their verbal and written communication skills in the context of neuroscience.
