To earn a Spanish major, students must complete a minimum of 24 credit hours beyond SPA 202, maintaining a C- or better in all major courses and an overall GPA of 2.5 within the major (refer to curriculum for specific course requirements). This program equips students with advanced language skills and deep cultural understanding of Spanish-speaking communities. Through coursework, students develop the ability to comprehend, analyze, and interpret various forms of communication and cultural expressions (including digital media, cinema, and literature) from diverse geopolitical perspectives. The curriculum also encourages students to reflect on their own linguistic and cultural background. Students hone critical thinking by constructing well-reasoned arguments both verbally and in writing, mastering text analysis techniques, conducting research, writing analytical papers, assessing information sources, understanding language in context, and appreciating linguistic artistry. The program provides comprehensive knowledge of the history, literature, and culture associated with the language while teaching students to make meaningful cultural comparisons and gain fresh perspectives on their own society.
