The Philosophy Department provides diverse undergraduate courses spanning all key philosophical fields and their historical development. Students may pursue either a major or minor in philosophy. The department also supports two student groups: the Philosophy Club for all university undergraduates, and Phi Sigma Tau, the local chapter of the National Philosophy Honor Society. These organizations facilitate regular gatherings where students can discuss philosophical ideas with peers, graduate students, and faculty members. All undergraduate philosophy enthusiasts are encouraged to join these intellectual gatherings. Philosophy examines foundational ethical, scientific, legal, artistic, religious, and metaphysical ideas that shape our understanding of existence. This discipline systematically explores essential truths, seeks comprehension, and investigates behavioral principles. It critically examines the foundational premises of other fields and the standards guiding human interaction and knowledge acquisition. Philosophy aims to define evidentiary standards, develop conflict resolution methods, and formulate techniques for assessing ideas and arguments. Philosophical training cultivates crucial skills: logical reasoning, argument evaluation, complex problem-solving, and applying rationality in emotionally charged situations. Research indicates philosophy graduates excel in standardized testing and analytical professions like law and technology. Beyond career applications, philosophy enriches one's appreciation for life's complexities while strengthening self-awareness, foresight, and personal direction.
