The Gender and Sexuality Studies (GSS) program at the University of Miami promotes in-depth examination of gender as a fundamental aspect of human existence. This interdisciplinary initiative incorporates diverse methodologies, theories, and viewpoints to analyze how gender-based concepts and systems influence our daily lives.
Gender and Sexuality Studies examines how conceptions of gender and sexuality form societal roles and personal identities, while also investigating how factors like race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and nationality affect gender and sexuality perceptions across different cultures. The program incorporates contemporary academic research acknowledging gender and sexuality as vital elements of human existence within social, cultural, economic, political, religious, and legal frameworks. Through GSS courses, students develop critical thinking and analytical abilities that enhance their academic pursuits at UM and prove valuable in their professional and personal growth after graduation.
